In the summer of 2007, Mtarfa FC were admitted into the MFA, taking the place of Ta’ Xbiex FC in the 3^rd Division 2007/08. The year before, a group of enthusiasts formed a football club in the newly formed local council of Mtarfa, a village in the northwest of Malta who had previously been always part of neighbouring Rabat. However, the name Mtarfa has been engraved into Maltese football history when in 1900, Floriana and St George’s, back then the two biggest clubs on the island, were playing a prestigious charity match which since then, has been given the name ‘the Imtarfa Cup’. The match played a huge role in the popularity of the game on the islands. Mtarfa FC have been playing so far at the lowest tier of Malta’s football pyramid, but the club is working hard in the youths’ sector, with revolutionary ideas to modernise Maltese football at youth level.
