UNDER 15 FRIENDLY
20th June 2022, Ta’ Qali Training Grounds
Yesterday evening, Francesco Macri’s Under-15 boys obtained a handsome 5-1 win over Gibraltar, the second end-of-season Friendly against the same opponent in three days as last Friday, the Maltese already booked a 2-1 victory. It was a deserved win in a game completely dominated by the hosts, in which all players worked hard, showed some good combination football and great tactical discipline.
Malta went ahead in their very first attack when Nathan Grech rounded off from the left after an inch perfect cross by Claude Mercieca. Gibraltar reacted well and it was Leon Mason who equalised after six minutes after Malta goalkeeper James Sisson failed control his close-range attempt with the ball passing the fatal line. Centre-back Shelom Magri’s shot from a corner action on 18 minutes sailed over the crossbar. But on 27 minutes, Malta took the lead thanks to a great individual goal from Sheldon Seychell, who outpaced his marker on the right flank and beat the Gibraltar goalie with an accurate grounder. The hosts were now all over their opponents and added two more goals in quick succession just before the break, thanks to Nathan Zerafa (37th minute) and Emerson Piscopo (38th).
After the break, Piscopo could have added his second but just missed target on 43 minutes while eight minutes later, his attempt was kicked from the goalline by a Gibraltar defender. However, hard working midfielder Jerome Baldacchino scored a beauty on the hour, deceiving the Gibraltar goalkeeper with a wonderful strong top corner shot from just outside the area. Much to their credit, with the outcome of the match beyond doubt, Malta, continued to surge forward with substitute Ubada Hijazi missing a couple of sitters on 68, 69 and 75 minutes while another substitute, Denzel Muscat, could have scored another one as well.
