BOV CHALLENGE LEAGUE 2025/26
PROMOTION DECIDER
Swieqi United 1-1 Birzebbuga St Peters
(after extra time)
(Birzebbuga St Peter’s winners after penalties: 6-7)
Birzebbuga St Peter’s made history on Thursday night, securing promotion to the Maltese Premier League for the first time in the club’s 80-year existence after a dramatic and nerve-wracking encounter at the Centenary Stadium.
The decisive runners-up playoff against Swieqi went the distance, with 120 minutes of football failing to separate the sides before Birzebbuga prevailed in a marathon penalty shootout that featured 16 spot-kicks.
The decider became necessary after both teams finished level on points in second place in the Challenge League, behind champions Balzan. Swieqi were notably without midfielder Salam Mawuena, while Birzebbuga had to cope without injured duo Randall Vella and Chris Baker.
In front of a crowd of 1,750, the match began cautiously, though it did not take long for the first breakthrough. Swieqi were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute after Juan Andres Bolanos held Augusto Caseres inside the area. Following confirmation via the FVS system, Zak Barbara converted confidently from the spot.
The Blues responded with intent. Timmy Aquilina produced a crucial save to deny Paul Lapira from close range, but the Blues gradually built pressure. Their persistence paid off just before the half-hour mark when Daniel Zerafa rose at the near post to head home from a corner and restore parity. Moments later, Duvan Mosquera came close to giving the seasiders the lead, his curling effort striking the top of the crossbar.
Swieqi suffered a setback in first-half stoppage time when goalkeeper Aquilina was forced off with a suspected shoulder injury, replaced by 20-year-old Kierin Ellul-Ruggier. Birzebbuga nearly capitalised before the break, but Lapira’s effort drifted wide after being set up by Mosquera.
The second half opened with both sides probing for an advantage. Swieqi initially looked sharper, with Barbara testing the Birzebbuga defence on several occasions, but the Saints gradually asserted control. Alex Bruno proved particularly influential down the right flank, repeatedly threatening to unlock the Swieqi backline and create opportunities for Mosquera and Lapira.
Despite a late chance for Barbara, which was cleared by Miguel Azzopardi, neither side could find a winner in regulation time, sending the match into extra time.
The Saints dominated the early stages of the additional period but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Their best opportunity came in the second half of extra time when Bruno delivered an excellent cross for Leo Agius, who failed to hit the target from close range.
With the deadlock unbroken, the contest was decided from the penalty spot. Birzebbuga converted all but one of their attempts, while Swieqi faltered twice, with Azzopardi saving Fenech’s effort and Samuel Okoh missing the decisive kick.
After the final whistle, the Birzebbuga St Peter’s players, technical staff and committee were presented with their runners-up medals by MFA Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris, celebrating a landmark achievement that secures their place among Malta’s football elite.
