BOV CHALLENGE LEAGUE 2025/26
MATCHDAY 22
Top 8
Balzan 2-0 Melita
On Sunday, Balzan secured an immediate return to the Premier League after a single season away, clinching the BOV Challenge League title with a composed 2-0 victory over Melita at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, coupled with favourable results elsewhere. The team of coach Andrew Cohen collected 48 points throughout the campaign, two more then Birzebbuga St Peter’s and Swieqi United, who will meet on Thursday in a Decider for the second promotion slot.
In a highly anticipated clash between two of the league’s standout sides, clear-cut chances were at a premium throughout a tightly contested encounter. Balzan broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with their first meaningful attack. A throw-in deep in the final third initiated a slick move between Samir Arab and Lydon Micallef, who combined neatly before Micallef picked out Sean Cipriott on the right edge of the area. Cipriott took a touch and curled a precise effort into the top-left corner, sparking celebrations among the Balzan supporters. Balzan nearly doubled their advantage just three minutes later. Jake Grech delivered a low ball from outside the area into the path of Michael Silva Oliveira, but the forward’s first-time effort sailed over the crossbar.
Melita’s response was limited in the opening half, though they came close to equalising shortly before the interval. A free kick from Nick Cutajar caused uncertainty in the Balzan defence, eventually falling to Gareth Barone, whose close-range volley drifted over the bar.
The decisive second goal arrived seven minutes into the second half. Cipriott, influential throughout, delivered a corner to the near post where Samir Arab flicked the ball into the bottom-right corner to extend the lead. Cipriott continued to threaten, forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Gosef Mizzi just after the hour with a curling free kick destined for the top corner. From the resulting corner, Awosanya Oluwale had a close-range opportunity, but Mizzi reacted quickly to deny the Nigerian quickfire.
Balzan remained dangerous on the counter, and in the 67th minute Arab surged forward from his own half before releasing Oluwale through on goal. However, Mizzi once again intervened to keep Melita in the contest. The final stages were managed professionally by Balzan, who limited Melita’s attacking opportunities and maintained control to secure a crucial victory.
After the final whistle, attention turned elsewhere as players, staff, and supporters awaited confirmation from the Centenary Stadium. News soon arrived that Swieqi had dropped points against Fgura United, confirming Balzan as BOV Challenge League champions and sealing their promotion back to the top flight. The trophy was presented to Balzan by Malta FA Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris and BOV Chief Operations Officer Ernest Agius.

Swieqi United 1-1 Fgura United
On Sunday at the Centenary Stadium, Swieqi United were held to a one-all draw by Fgura United, who played one of their best matches of the campaign. Swieqi therefore lost two priceless points as they could have joined Balzan into the Premier Division. As Birzebbuga managed to beat Sirens, a decider is now needed between Swieqi and Birzebbuga to determine who will join Balzan into the top tier for 2026/27.
Inside the opening 10 minutes, Swieqi came close on two occasions through Augusto Caseres and Kian Leonardi, with Fgura goalie Gerson Mifsud interfering well on both occasions. It was veteran midfielder Paul Fenech who produced an unstoppable top corner scorcher from about 20-meters distance on 18 minutes to put Swieqi 1-0 up. Eight minutes later, Zak Barbara blasted high from a Salem Mawuena cross. Fgura did their part by forcing out a few corners apart from trying to break on counterattacks, with Karl Formosa and Sergio Mosquera producing a few off-target attempts.
Three minutes after the restart, Timmy Aquilina turned a header by Timmy Akande into a corner, which was up to that point the best chance for Fgura. It was the Reds who in fact opened well, clearly pushing for an equaliser. Close to the hour from a corner action, Lee Pisani headed towards Andrew Xuereb at the second post whose attempt went wide. On 70 minutes, Fgura scored the deserved equaliser when Karl Formosa headed a perfect Matteo Gambin cross from the left in the far corner.
Swieqi had to go full on attack to safeguard their much-desired promotion but initially limited themselves to some shots from distance through Mawuena and Fenech. It was in fact Fgura who came close to a winner with two minutes regular time left with Kayne Haber’s grounder from just outside the box going inches wide. Swieqi ended the match with 10 as Samuel Okoh limped off injured when all substitutes were already used. Deep in stoppage time, Mawuena missed a huge opportunity to seal promotion for his side, but his diagonal grounder went wide with only Mifsud to beat.
Birzebbuga St Peter’s 3-2 Sirens
Also on Sunday, with the same kick-off time as the Balzan and Swieqi encounters, Birzebbuga St Peter’s came from behind to beat Sirens 3-2 to end their commitments in second place on level points with Swieqi United. It was a hard-earned victory for the Blues against a plucky Sirens side, with the Saints bringing a good number of supporters with to the Luxol Stadium, despite the fact they fully depended on the results elsewhere to know their fate.
It took Sirens just five minutes to take the lead when Jean Borg sent Trezeguet Zammit through on the right and the latter hit past goalkeeper Julian Azzopardi, a shock lead and severe setback for the team of coach Edgar Degabriele. Birzebbuga replied with a Zachary Cassar effort from the left which was blocked with Duvan Mosquera hitting just wide off the rebound a minute later. On 17 minutes, Thiago Nonato had a shot which was partially saved and shots by Borg and Akadom were blocked by defenders. Five minutes later, a Mosquera effort from outside the area was saved by goalkeeper Ryan Vella.
The Saints managed to level matters on 31 minutes thanks to Matthew Xuereb who controlled an assist from the left before slotting past Vella. Trezeguet Zammit entered the area from the right and lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper on 35 minutes but his attempt ended off target while Alex Bruno, served by Mosquera, had a curling shot from the left saved by the goalkeeper on 41 minutes. However, Sirens regained the lead one minute in added time when Hafiz Akadom, served by Zammit, was floored inside the area by Randall Vella and Thiago Nonato converted from the penalty spot, his 17th goal of the campaign.
Birzebbuga restored equilibrium four minutes in the second half when Alex Bruno delivered a cross from the left and Leo Agius headed home from close range. Spurred by this equaliser, the Saints made it 3-2 on 56 minutes when off an Alex Bruno corner from the left, Daniel Zerafa headed home past goalkeeper Vella. A Paul Lapira effort from the edge of the area was tipped into a corner by Vella on 67 minutes and a cross shot by Kane Paul Farrugia was parried by Azzopardi on 75 minutes.
Saints substitute Charles Samson Chibuike concluded a good run on the right flank with a shot which was deflected into a corner on 83 minutes and four minutes later, Akadom had a shot from outside the area deflected into a corner. Two minutes in added time, Thiago Nonato went close to notching the equaliser but was unlucky to hit the upright with a direct free kick. With Swieqi dropping two points against Fgura United, it means that the Blues will play Swieqi in a Decider for promotion to the top tier on Thursday 23rd April 2026 at the Centenary Stadium, kick off 19.00hrs.
Pieta’ Hotspurs 2-2 St Andrews
The late Centenary Stadium kick-off last Sunday ended in a two-all draw, an entertaining match without any significant meaning as both sides were already out of the promotion contest for a few weeks. It was the 403rd and last game for Marcelo Dias, aged 40, after a wonderful career in Malta with Hibernians, Senglea, Floriana, Gudja and Gzira United, a popular figure in Maltese football circles.
Pieta’ showed the better ideas in the opening phase with Nicholas Pisani coming close on 21 minutes with a close-range attempt, well blocked by Luxol custodian Sebastian Mifsud. Five minutes later however, it was St Andrews who opened the score when Ethan Brincat-Winters anticipated on a defensive error in the Hotspurs rear-guard, making no mistake against Reeves Cini in a one-on-one situation. The Hotspurs pushed for and equaliser and saw, towards the end of the half, two shots of Gabriel Xuereb and James Brincat go wide.
On 58 minutes, Arthur Felippe capitalised on a defensive error by St Andrews and with Mifsud out of position, the Brazilian scored into the empty net, his 18th goal of the campaign. Six minutes later, Pieta’ turned the match around thanks to a Sam Farrugia scorcher from just outside the area which sailed into the net. The Blues came close to a third goal on 72 minutes after a free-kick of Lecao ended up towards Arthur Felippe, who drilled his attempt against the crossbar.
In the closing stages, Jake Borg had two good opportunities for the Hotspurs to extent their lead but failed to hit passed Mifsud. On the other side, Liam Scicluna should have scored the 202 but hilariously miskicked the ball with only Cini to beat. However, deep into stoppage time, North Macedonian substitute Andrej Nakov drilled home the equaliser from close-range after a goalmouth melee’.
Play-Out
Zebbug Rangers 1-1 Marsa
On Saturday, Billy Mock’s Zebbug Rangers secured their place in the Challenge League for another season after earning a crucial point against direct rivals Marsa, a result that condemns Ryan Fenech’s side to Amateur League football.
Heading into the encounter, Marsa knew that only a victory would be enough to force a relegation decider with Zebbug. However, despite their efforts, they fell short of the win they desperately needed.
Marsa made the brighter start, pinning Zebbug deep inside their own half during the opening stages, although they struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first 20 minutes. Zebbug gradually grew into the match and came close to breaking the deadlock when Olalekan Opajobi produced a fine solo run, only to see his effort drift inches wide. The breakthrough eventually arrived in Marsa’s favour, as Gabriel De Castro rose highest to head home from a well-delivered free kick by Zeron Azzopardi, giving his side a deserved lead.
Zebbug responded immediately and nearly found an equaliser, but Dylan Agius was denied from close range by an outstanding save from Amara Sylla. Marsa remained a threat, with Davi Versiani going close from a direct free kick that narrowly missed the target.
The decisive moment arrived 15 minutes from time when Zebbug found the goal that would ultimately secure their survival. Nigerian box-to-box midfielder Shedrack Thomas tapped in from close range following a well-timed headed assist by veteran Daren Falzon, sparking celebrations among the Rangers’ supporters.
Marsa threw everything forward in the closing stages in search of a winner, but their efforts proved insufficient. Their best opportunity fell to Gabriel Diego Farrugia, whose central effort sailed over the bar. At the other end, substitute Lydon Sammut nearly sealed the result for Zebbug, only to be denied by another excellent save from Amara
In the end, the draw proved enough for Zebbug Rangers, while Marsa are left to reflect on missed opportunities as they prepare for life in the Amateur League next season.
Zurrieq 4-2 Mgarr United
Also on Saturday, Zurrieq came from behind to secure an entertaining victory over Mgarr United in the late kick-off at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, in a match where both sides had little left to play for this season.
Before kick-off, there was a heartfelt moment as veteran goalkeeper Jonathan Debono of Mgarr was honoured ahead of his final career appearance for bringing the curtain down for his illustrious career of 23 seasons, 12 clubs and 424 official appearances.
The Northerners made a strong start and took the lead with their first effort on target after eight minutes when Cristhyan Noto found the net with a low strike that slipped through the legs of Giancarlo Borg, his 17th campaign goal. The Brazilian forward nearly doubled the advantage shortly after, but his powerful long-range effort was well saved by Borg. Zurrieq responded with quality, equalising through a stunning strike by Gabriel Aquilina, as his effort from outside the box flew just under the crossbar into the right corner, leaving Debono with no chance.
After the break, the team of coach Jose’ Borg stepped up their intensity and completed the turnaround. At first, Leonard Londe put Zurrieq ahead with a composed finish into the right corner from inside the area, while just before the hour, Sebastian Grech extended the lead with an excellent long-range strike. Grech almost added another moments later, but his powerful attempt crashed against the crossbar.
Mgarr reduced the deficit in the 68th minute through Christyan, who headed home from close range to keep his side in the contest. However, Zurrieq quickly restored their advantage as Grech grabbed his second of the match, finishing from close range following a well-timed cross by Londe. Zurrieq comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to seal the win in what proved to be an open and entertaining encounter.
Vittoriosa Stars 2-3 Gudja United
On Saturday at the Centenary Stadium, in their last match of the season, Vittoriosa and Gudja United produced an enjoyable clash, won by Gudja with the odd goal in five. Both teams were mathematically safe from the drop and therefore the encounter was thus nothing more than a training spin.
Gudja took the lead after a mere six minutes when a cross by Donys Quintero found Jamie Carbone who had no difficulty beating Edward Gatt. Gudja continued dominating and added another on just before the half hour with a fine strike by Quintero. Gudja came close to a third goal on 35 minutes when Shola Haruna Shodiya went on a probing run on the right but his cross somehow could not be tapped in by Quintero.
Vittoriosa reduced the deficit on 63 minutes with a well taken goal by substitute Samuel Boakye and managed to equalise on 78 minutes thanks to a fine shot by Isaiah Micallef. However, Gudja scored the winner on 86 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a handball that was converted by Shodiya. It was mission accomplished however for both teams, as they both avoided the drop and can therefore prepare for another season Challenge League football.
Mtarfa 1-5 Santa Lucia
On Sunday night at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Santa Lucia signed off their Challenge League playout campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 5-1 victory over Mtarfa on the final matchday in a performance that underlined the contrasting fortunes of the two sides.
Santa Lucia set the tone early and threatened in the 11th minute when Jake Friggieri picked out Filip Petkovski inside the area. Petkovski’s first-time layoff found Rinor Ajdini, whose effort from the right side of the box was well saved by goalkeeper Jacob Mangion. The breakthrough arrived five minutes later. Zack Bartolo brought down Matthias Vella inside the area, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Jean Carlos stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner, beating Mangion despite the goalkeeper diving the right way. The Lucians doubled their lead in the 25th minute through a moment of quality from Petkovski. Vella delivered a precise ball over the top, and Petkovski responded with a composed chip from just outside the area to make it 2–0.
The North Macedonian forward added his second and Santa Lucia’s third in the 41st minute, finishing from close range after connecting with Bahri Hannan’s low cross. The hosts struck again just two minutes later, as Jean Carlos headed a delivery into the path of Petkovski, who unselfishly laid it off for Vella to fire into the top-right corner and cap a dominant first-half display.
Mtarfa struggled to make an impact before the break but showed brief signs of improvement early in the second half. In the 50th minute, Tristen Sultana delivered a cross to Ognjen Ilic, whose header was denied by the goalkeeper. Moments later, Mtarfa pulled one back when Ilic turned provider, setting up Luke Camilleri to finish from close range. The Saints responded and in the 57th minute, Jake Cordina’s low curling effort struck the base of the post.
Santa Lucia completed the scoring in the 70th minute when Ajdini found Petkovski on the right, and although his initial effort was blocked, the rebound fell to Shalon Diacono, who converted from close range at the near post.
The result sealed a comprehensive win for Santa Lucia, while Mtarfa’s heavy defeat served as a fitting reflection of a difficult campaign.
