BOV CHALLENGE LEAGUE 2025/26
MATCHDAY 21

Top Eight
Balzan 3-3 Birzebbuga St Peter’s
On Sunday in the match of the weekend, Balzan kept their promotion hopes alive after a dramatic 3–3 draw against Birzebbuga St Peter’s in a thrilling encounter played in front of a season-high crowd of 1,067 spectators at the Centenary Stadium. Balzan, who scored the equaliser deep into stoppage time, now know that their return to the Premier League will hinge on their final fixture against Melita, where victory is essential.

Both teams opted for a cautious opening approach, with not much to report in the first half hour. It was Birzebbuga who took the lead in the 34th minute however, through former Valletta forward Paul Lapira, who unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area that left goalkeeper Dylan Ciappara with no chance.

There were five goals after the interval, with Balzan responding strongly and being awarded a penalty on 56 minutes. However, Awosanja Oluwale was denied from the spot by an excellent save from Blues goalkeeper Julian Azzopardi. The catch proved pivotal, as the Saints doubled their lead just three minutes later when Duvan Mosquera found the net with a fierce effort from the edge of the box.

Balzan quickly hit back in the 63rd minute when substitute Lydon Micallef’s long-range attempt was turned into the net by captain Samir Arab, reducing the deficit. Yet the lead was restored almost immediately as two minutes later, Lapira struck again, this time with a low finish to complete his brace and re-establish a two-goal cushion for Birzebbuga.

With the Blues having a historic promotion into the Premier Division become reality, it all went wrong for the seasiders in the last part of the game. Michael Silva Oliveira pulled one back for Balzan in the 83rd minute with a close-range finish, setting up a tense finale. Balzan pressed forward in search of an equaliser and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Oluwale redeemed his earlier penalty miss with a superb free-kick that sealed a crucial point in a pulsating contest.

With one match to go, Birzebbuga trail Balzan and Swieqi United by two points and need to win their final fixture against Sirens, hoping that any of the two top teams will drop points this upcoming weekend.

St Andrews 0-1 Swieqi United
On Saturday night at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Swieqi United strengthened their position in the standings with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over neighbours St Andrews in a closely contested derby. Coached by Liam Mangion, Swieqi  were the superior side for much of the encounter and could have extended their lead further, having missed a penalty late in the first half. The result leaves them within touching distance of a historic first-ever promotion into the Malta Premier League, which will be sealed should they beat Fgura United next Sunday.

St Andrews were forced into an early reshuffle just seven minutes into the match when former Malta international Dale Camilleri was forced off through injury, making way for Matthew Bonnici. Swieqi created the first real opportunity on 19 minutes, as Isaac Davey fired a powerful long-range effort that sailed over the crossbar. Their pressure paid off just after the half hour mark when Zak Barbara produced a superb free-kick to beat goalkeeper Sebastian Mifsud to break the deadlock.

St Andrews responded shortly after, with veteran Brazilian striker Taylon meeting an inviting cross, but his header drifted over the bar. Swieqi were handed a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 39th minute after being awarded a penalty. However, Kian Leonardi failed to convert, sending his low effort wide.

After the break, Swieqi maintained control of proceedings, with Leonardi and Salem Mawuena posing a constant threat to the St Andrews defence, though clear-cut chances remained limited. The scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle, as Swieqi managed the game effectively to secure three valuable points, celebrating a deserved derby triumph at full time.

Melita 0-1 Fgura United
An early goal paved the way for Fgura to return to winning ways against Melita on Saturday night at the Centenary Stadium in a drab encounter were only pride was at stake. The match never reached any heights with both teams not at full strength mainly due to injuries of some key players.

It took Fgura just three minutes to take the lead, catching the Melita defence offguard when Sergio Mosquera kicked home a Samuel Buhagiar cross from close-range. Fgura kept on showing the better ideas with Melita goalkeeper Sean Mintoff saving a Timmy Akande shot on 23 minutes. Fourteen minutes later, Karl Formosa placed his corner-kick on top of the crossbar for Fgura, who managed to keep the Amateurs far from their goal in an otherwise uneventful first period.

Fgura kept on having the initiative after the restart with Mintoff performing a great block on an Akande attempt on 54 minutes and did the same four minutes later, parading a Kayne Haber shot from the edge of the area. Melita responded with their best chance of the evening when Karl Mohnani had a free entrance on the left side of the box, with Fgura goalie Gerson Mifsud turning the attempt of the former U21 international into a corner. In stoppage time, Gareth Barone’s goal attempt sailed wide for the Amateurs in what was the last goal action of the game.

Sirens 3-4 Pieta’ Hotspurs
No less than seven goals in this Top Eight clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Sunday afternoon, where Pieta’ Hotspurs and Sirens put up a good showing with the teams out of any promotion hopes. Arthur Felippe scored three of the four Pieta’ goals, rising to the top of the Top Scorers list with 17 goals, along with Balzan’s Oluwale.

Sirens were certainly not wasting any time and took the lead after just seven minutes with the speedy merchant Hafiz Akadom blasting into the net with ease. Pieta’ hit back almost immediately and on 12 minutes it was Arthur Felippe who cooly slotted past Ryan Vella. Four minutes later, it was almost Sirens ahead again when Akadom was sent in the clear, but his effort ended up inches wide. In the lively opening period, a good chance went begging for Pieta’ when Emmanuel Bio passed to James Brincat whose effort was blocked by Ryan Vella. But it was Sirens who went ahead again after Pieta’ defender Gabriel Mannino turned the ball into his own net.

The Spurs equalised on 51 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Nicholas Pisani was felled in the box with Arthur Felippe making no mistake from the spot. A minute later, Pieta’ were in front for the first time when Gabriel Xuereb concluded with success. Joel Quist almost made it 3-3 for Sirens immediately with a shot that went just wide on 54 minutes. Pieta’ went further ahead on 55 minutes with Arthur Felippe notching his hat trick as the match turned into a goalfest.

Sirens reduced the deficit on 73 minutes when they were awarded a penalty that was converted by Thiago Nonato, his 16th of the campaign. Pieta’ missed a sitter on 84 minutes when Emmanuel Bio shot over whilst completely in the clear. Sirens could have equalised on 87 minutes when Carlos Chaba’s effort was brilliantly stopped by Reeves Cini.

Play-Out
Vittoriosa Stars 0-1 Zebbug Rangers
On Saturday at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Zebbug Rangers secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Vittoriosa Stars, with an early strike proving decisive in a tightly contested encounter. It was the win the Rangers needed before going into next Saturday’s decisive encounter with Marsa in their quest for salvation.

The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute, when Nigerian midfielder Shedrack Thomas capitalised on the first clear opportunity for Zebbug. The ball fell kindly at his feet inside the area and made no mistake from close range, calmly slotting home what ultimately stood as the match-winning goal.

With the men of veteran coach Billy Mock retreating, the remainder of the contest was largely played in midfield, with limited goalmouth action for long stretches. Vittoriosa’s best chance arrived in the 69th minute, when substitute Aidan Agius Gilford unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. To their credit, albeit already save from the drop and nothing to play for, the Stars did everything it could to level out the score.

Pushing for an equaliser, Vittoriosa came close again five minutes later. From a well-delivered corner, Luca Mallia rose to meet the ball with a strong header from close range, only to be denied by an excellent save from Zebbug goalkeeper Jean Claude Debattista, who preserved his side’s slender lead until the final whistle.

Marsa 5-0 Mtarfa
Also on Saturday, Marsa delivered a commanding performance to comfortably defeat already relegated Mtarfa 5–0, underlining their superiority throughout the encounter. It was an important victory at the Victor Tedesco Stadium for the team of coach Ryan Fenech, who keep their chances alive to prolong their Challenge League status.

Marsa opened the score on 36 minutes when Davi Versiani struck a precise direct free-kick, leaving goalkeeper Jacob Mangion without a chance. Marsa maintained their attacking momentum and doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, as Neil Demanuele clinically finished from close range.

The Red Blues continued to press after the interval and came close to adding a third on 57 minutes, but Davi Versiani’s low effort struck the foot of the post. However, Marsa were not to be denied for long, extending their lead on 63 minutes when Godfred Sakyi unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the area into the back of the net.

Demanuele grabbed his second of the match on 70 minutes, converting from close range to make it 4–0 and effectively put the result beyond doubt. Marsa completed the scoring six minutes from time, with Sheldon Seychell producing an excellent long-range effort that once again left Mangion helpless.

With a comprehensive five-goal cushion, Marsa comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure an emphatic victory. Marsa now need to win their last game of the season against Rangers to force out a Relegation Decider against the same Rangers, the only way for the historic club to avoid relegation into the Amateur League.

Mgarr United 0-2 Gudja United
On Sunday night, Gudja United secured a valuable 2–0 victory over Mgarr United, with goals in either half ensuring a composed and deserved performance. It was a game with nothing but pride to play for, as both teams are home and dry from relegation worries.

Gudja took control early and opened the scoring in the 21st minute through former Birkirkara forward Shola Haruna Shodiya, who finished clinically with a low diagonal strike from a favourable position. The Blues maintained their attacking momentum and nearly doubled their advantage ten minutes later, but Shodiya was denied a second goal as his powerful long-range effort sailed over the bar.

The second goal arrived shortly after the restart when Colombian striker Donys Quintero calmly slotted home from close range with a precise low finish, leaving goalkeeper Miguel Chetcuti with no chance. Gudja continued to press forward and came close to adding a third in the 66th minute when Jamie Carbone’s low drive from the edge of the area was deflected behind for a corner by Chetcuti.

Mgarr briefly threatened a response a minute later, as Cristhyan Noto struck from close range, only to see his effort hit the side netting, momentarily deceiving the spectators. Gudja remained the more dangerous side, with Shodiya again testing Chetcuti, who was forced into another save to deny him from close range.

The remainder of the match saw Gudja manage their two-goal lead comfortably, securing all three points with a disciplined and assured display.

Santa Lucia 3-0 Zurrieq
In another seemingly innocuous game in the BOV Challenge League Play-Out, Santa Lucia beat Zurrieq 3-0 in a lively encounter. Big respect to the Santa Lucia and Zurrieq faithful, who were out in force as usual with a full-size band and loud hailers adding to the atmosphere.

It was Santa Lucia who took the lead courtesy of Cloth Goncalves who concluded with aplomb after 12 minutes. The rest of the half was quite boorish with neither side really making inroads although Zurrieq were obviously obliged to attack.

Santa Lucia doubled in first half injury time when captain Adrian Borg shot an excellent low shot into the corner of the net. Zurrieq had a good opportunity to reduce the deficit on 65 minutes when a shot by Anderson de Barros just grazed the side netting.

Santa Lucia made sure of the points seven minutes from time when substitute Filip Petkovski smashed into the net from close range.
