BOV CHALLENGE LEAGUE 2025/26
MATCHDAY 20

Top Eight
Sirens 0-1 Balzan
On Monday night at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Balzan booked a heard-earned 1-0 victory over Sirens thanks to an early goal by Owasanja Oluwale. An important three points for the league leaders, who remain two points ahead of Birzebbuga and Swieqi United, the last two competitors to challenge Balzan for the Championship. The defeat for Sirens meant they are now out of the running for one of the promotion slots.

In the balanced opening period, Sirens threatened twice through a long-distance volley by Thiago Nonato that ended on top of the net while a Mason Agius attempt was saved by Dylan Ciappara. But on 16 minutes it was Balzan who opened with a grounder in the far corner by Owasanja Oluwale, a strike that proved to be decisive. Eight minutes later, Samir Arab should have doubled at the second post from a free-kick but the Balzan captain kicked straight in the hands of Sirens custodian Ryan Caruana.

Oluwale was back in the thick of the action just after the half hour mark with a close-range grounder, ably saved by Caruana. Sirens wasted a good chance on 41 minutes when, from a Kane Farrugia free-kick, Carlos Chaba headed towards the unmarked Thiago Nonato at the second post, but the Brazilian striker blasted his attempt high over the bar.

Ten minutes after the break, Thiago Nonato came again close to an equaliser with Ciappara however, comfortably saving his goal attempt. Just after the hour on the other side, Oluwale progressed through the heart of the Sirens defence but steered his shot wide. On 75 minutes, substitute Gabriel Chiemezie should have doubled for Balzan from point-blank, unmarked in the box but shot straight at Caruana. Towards the end there were opportunities on both ends, but the score remained unchanged. After the final whistle, Caruana was shown the red card after an incident involving several players from both sides.

Balzan is now playing Birzebbuga on Sunday in a crucial clash for promotion into the Premier League, while Melita waits for Balzan on the last match day.

St Andrews 1-3 Birzebbuga St Peter’s
On Saturday, Birzebbuga secured a vital three points in their promotion push with a convincing win over St Andrews at the Centenary Stadium, despite a brief second-half resurgence from the Luxol side. The Blues scored all their three goals in the first half but saw St Andrews come back strong after the re-start.

The team of coach Edgar Degabriele made a blistering start, taking the lead in the third minute when Daniel Zerafa reacted quickest from a corner to fire into the roof of the net. The Blues doubled their advantage shortly after, as Jacob Walker capitalised on defensive hesitation to set up Paul Lapira for a simple finish into an empty net. St Andrews showed occasional attacking intent, with efforts from Michael Zuo and Matthew Muscat going off target, but Birzebbuga remained firmly in control. Their dominance paid off again in the 40th minute, when a well-worked free-kick routine ended with Duvan Mosquera, who started the season with St Andrews, curling a superb strike into the top corner to make it 3–0 at the break.

The second half saw a shift in momentum as Birżebbuġa eased off, allowing St Andrews back into the contest. The visitors pulled one back from the penalty spot six minutes after the change of ends after Zuo was fouled, with Elizeu converting confidently. Not much later, Zuo then came close again, striking the crossbar from distance.

St Andrews were handed another chance to reduce the deficit when they won a second penalty just after the hour, but Julian Azzopardi produced an excellent save to deny 17-year-old Ethan Brincat Winters. Despite late pressure and a couple of half-chances in the closing stages, St Andrews were unable to find further goals. In the end, Birzebbuga’s dominant first-half display proved decisive, as they held on for a crucial victory in an increasingly competitive promotion race. They play league leaders Balzan on Sunday and Sirens on the last match day.

Swieqi United 5-0 Melita
In this decisive clash on Saturday at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Swieqi United faced off against Melita in what could be defined as a battle for Premier League promotion. Both sides started the match just one point from each other in third and fourth respectively with a win leaving one of the teams in pole position for promotion. Therefore, not many would have expected a large Swieqi victory, but that is what happened as the Owls emphatically pushed the Amateurs aside with a 5-0 scoreline.

Swieqi started like a house on fire and took the lead after just two minutes when Augusto Caceres smashed a fine shot past Gosef Mizzi from an angled position. Another chance arrived on 14 minutes when Isaac Davey went on a probing run with his point-blank shot saved by Mizzi.

The Owls doubled the score on the half hour when Salam Mawuena was fouled in the box with the referee unhesitatingly pointing to the spot. Kean Leonardi made no mistake, sending Mizzi the wrong way.

Melita did try to get back into the game but it was all over for the team of coach Brian Said on 57 minutes when Leonardi crossed a beautiful ball that was finished off with aplomb by Caceres.

It got better for Swieqi and calamitous for Melita on 65 minutes when Daniel Agius notched the fourth goal with another supreme effort. The fifth goal arrived two minutes later courtesy of Mawuena as the nightmare continued for Melita. Swieqi controlled easily to notch up an important victory in their quest for a historic promotion. The team of coach Liam Mangion are left to play against St Andrews and Fgura, two teams out of the running for promotion and therefore Swieqi have the best papers to clinch one of the two promotion slots.

Fgura United 0-4 Pieta’ Hotspurs
In the second match of the afternoon both Fgura United and Pieta’ Hotspurs were playing for pride as they were out of the promotion discourse. All four Pieta’ goals arrived after the change of ends. Both sides, known for their impressive youth system, introduced some youngsters.

Both teams started brightly with Fgura perhaps marginally more adventurous. However, there was absolutely no goalmouth action in the first half with neither keeper called into action.

The first chance of the match came right after the start of the second half with a shot by Gabriel Xuereb that ended up just wide. But that was simply a prelude to a wonderful goal scored by debutant Bjorn Caruana who let fly from 30 metres with the ball sailing into the top of the net leaving Gerson Mifsud with no chance.

The Spurs doubled on 66 minutes when a finely weighted pass by Caruana found Arthur Felipe, who made no mistake from close range to kick home his 14th goal of the campaign. The game was put beyond any doubt on 75 minutes when a pass by Brazilian veteran Lecao released James Brincat who smashed a superb shot into the right bottom corner. The fourth goal was scored on 80 minutes when a superb cross shot by Lecao ended up against the net.

After a tight opening 45 minutes, it was eventually an easy romp for Pieta’ who look to continue their commitments in the Top Eight on a high, with Sirens and St Andrews left to play.

Bottom Eight
Gudja United 1-2 Zebbug Rangers
On Saturday at the Centenary Stadium, Billy Mock’s Zebbug Rangers secured a vital victory over Gudja United, strengthening their position in the standings and moving three points clear of Marsa. An important victory for the Rangers, who now face Vittoriosa on Saturday and Marsa in a direct clash on the last match day, to keep the outcome of the relegation battle firmly into their own hands.

The Rangers began with clear attacking intent and nearly opened the scoring inside six minutes when Isaac Chetcuti forced a save that resulted in a corner. From the ensuing set piece, Dylan Agius combined neatly with Olalekan Opajobi, who produced a superb curling effort from the edge of the area that sailed over the goalkeeper into the top corner. Gudja responded swiftly and drew level in the 15th minute. A well-weighted through ball into the box caused confusion between the Zebbug goalkeeper and his defenders, allowing Veljko Tasic to capitalise and slot home the equaliser.

Zebbug continued to press, and midway through the half, Chetcuti delivered a cross that was met by Nathan Sultana, though his header lacked power and was only partially cleared. The loose ball fell to Shedrack Thomas at the edge of the area, but his volley drifted wide. As the balanced opening half progressed, the nippy Opajobi remained a constant threat, setting up Sultana with a lofted pass in the 38th minute, only for the latter to fire narrowly over from a tight angle.

Just before the interval, Zebbug created another promising move after winning possession high up the pitch. A swift passing sequence involving Ayrton Mizzi, Thomas and Opajobi ended with the latter testing the goalkeeper. However, Agius failed to capitalise on the rebound, with his effort comfortably gathered.

The Rangers regained the lead in the 56th minute through Opajobi once again, as the winger weaved past a defender at the edge of the box before unleashing a shot that took a deflection and found the back of the net. The Gudjans pushed for another equaliser late on, with Enzo Ruiz attempting a first-time effort from outside the area in the 78th minute, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Zebbug remained dangerous on the counter, and Agius tested the goalkeeper again shortly after, though without success.

In the closing stages, Gudja came close to level out the encounter through Jamie Carbone, whose bouncing half-volley from outside the box went narrowly wide. Zebbuġ nearly sealed the win deep into stoppage time when Lydon Sammut and Agius combined well, the latter striking a powerful effort that rattled the crossbar.

That proved to be the final action of the match, as Żebbuġ held firm to claim a hard-fought and significant three points.

Zurrieq 2-1 Marsa
On Wednesday night at the Centenary Stadium, Zurrieq beat Marsa 2-1 with the decisive goal being scored deep into stoppage time. Thanks to this victory, Zurrieq secured themselves from another season Challenge League football as they cannot be overtaken anymore by the teams in the red zone. Marsa however, live to fight another day as the point would have been a much welcome morale booster for the team of coach Ryan Fenech. Marsa trail Zebbug with three points and with matches against Mtarfa and a direct encounter with the Rangers left, need two victories and a little help elsewhere to avoid the drop, a tough task.

Marsa, with the wind in their backs, started the brighter side in this must-win encounter, forcing out a few corners and in one of these on 18 minutes, Klose Azzopardi Conti came close to break the deadlock with an opportunity in the six-yard box. Marsa goalkeeper Jake Scicluna was called into action for the first time six minutes later, doing well to block a Sheldon MacKay attempt. On 34 minutes, it was Zurrieq who opened the scoring when Leonard Londe volleyed home from close-range after the Marsa rear-guard failed to clear the ball from a corner. Four minutes later, Londe came close again with a scorcher from 20-meters distance which sailed inches wide. However, Marsa managed to equalise in stoppage time when Neil Demanuele headed home a wonderful curling cross by Zeron Azzopardi from the left flank.

Play remained balanced after the change of ends with Azzopardi Conti coming close with a cross-shot on 58 minutes that was saved by Jurgen Borg. Seven minutes later on the other side, Scicluna tipped a corner by Sebastian Grech over the bar and from that corner, Londe’s attempt sailed inches wide. This was during a period that Zurrieq pressed for their second goal, with Grech forcing Scicluna in another great block on 68 minutes. On 74 minutes, Marsa produced a wonderful counterattack which ended with a curling Mathias Bugeja attempt which sailed inches wide but deserved more. Three minutes later, Londe should have done better with a free attempt which the American striker shot straight in the hands of Scicluna. It was Zurrieq who scored a stoppage time winner when substitute Jonathan Monney finished with an angled shot from just outside the area from a neat counterattack.

Mtarfa 0-1 Vittoriosa Stars
In Wednesday nights’ early Centenary Stadium kick-off, Vittoriosa recorded a hard-earned victory over bottom side Mtarfa, an important three points for the Stars in their bid for survival. It was a match which never reached any heights and, although Jason Camenzuli’s side created the better chances, the game was rather balanced.

The opening half was quite balanced with both sides pushing for an opener. The Stars limited themselves to some long-distance attempts by Blessing Brafo and Luca Mallia while Mtarfa earned some free-kicks from promising angles but without troubling Vittoriosa goalkeeper Jake Farrugia much. The Cottonera produced their first attempt on target on 38 minutes when Mallia tested the Mtarfa goalie with a grounder, saved without difficulty by Jacob Mangion. Deep into stoppage time, Isaiah Micallef blasted home from a goalmouth melee’ to give Vittoriosa a 1-0 lead at half-time.

More of the same after the change of ends with Mtarfa clearly searching for an equaliser. Th team of coach Ludvic Bartolo deserved an equaliser as Vittoriosa played below standard and struggled throughout. The open spaces in the Mtarfa defence also created opportunities for the Cottonera side however, with Fred Kessie stretching Mangion into a splendid save on 73 minutes. But with Mtarfa tiring out, the Stars created chances through Brafo, Renan Bigode and Micallef which were all paraded by Mangion.

Mgarr United 1-1 Santa Lucia
Only pride was at stake in Monday nights’ late kick-off between Mgarr United and Santa Lucia who, both safe from the drop, played out an entertaining one-all draw at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. A deserved outcome in a balanced game which saw both sides creating several opportunities throughout the game.

Goalmouth action at a premium during the first half. Bahri Hanan had an off-target attempt for the Saints on 17 minutes while Mgarr replied by a diagonal Cristhyan Noto shot on 25 minutes which also went wide. Jean Carlos, in this 100th game in Malta, had a free-kick well saved by Miguel Chetcuti on 33 minutes. But the best opportunity of the half was perhaps for Cristhyan three minutes later, served by Azriel Borg, who hit the side-netting with a powerful attempt.

Play remained balanced after the break with both sides creating opportunities. A Jamie Nicholl attempt from just outside the box for the Lucians was well paraded by Miguel Chetcuti on 56 minutes. But it was Mgarr who broke the deadlock ten minutes later through substitute Wisdom Igiebor, who was sent in the clear and lobbed handsomely over Christopher Farrugia. Not much later on the other side, Chetcuti did again well to turn a Jean Carlos strike into a corner. With five minutes regular time on the clock left, Santa Lucia equalised thanks to a Filip Petkovski header from a Jean Carlos free-kick, a deserved equaliser.

Apart from Jean Carlos, also Santa Lucia defender Julian Abela reached a milestone as it was his 200th career game.
